Mizzou Football has Arrived

So This is Pretty Sweet

Mizzou is on the cover of Sports Illustrated.....again. For the second time in less than a year Mizzou of all schools is on the cover of SI. For anyone who is up to date on sports this is relatively old news as this cover came out about a week ago. But since I took a week off blogging and love Mizzou and said I would talk about Mizzou on this blog I decided to post this, so deal with it.

The cover is one of five different covers SI is distributing across the nation. The other four covers feature Georgia, Florida, Ohio State, and USC. That is some pretty awesome company for Mizzou. A year ago today you'd be lucky to find any mention at all about Mizzou's football team in SI. Nowadays I guess we're the shit. Honestly how surreal is it to see Mizzou, Mizzou for fucks sake, named in the same breath as Georgia, Florida, Ohio State, and USC. Jesus this year is gonna be great.

The reason Mizzou made it on the cover is because we were ranked #4 by Sports Illustrated in the their complete 1-110 rankings of Division 1 (or whatever the hell they call it now) football teams. Mizzou was ranked 7 in the coaches poll and the AP Poll comes out on the 15th I believe.

SI's top 5 went as follows:

  1. Georgia
  2. Ohio State
  3. USC
  4. Mizzou
  5. Florida
If I had to guess, purely based on schedules, Florida and Georgia won't be sticking around that top 5 all season, definitely not both of them anyway. Georgia's schedule is the toughest schedule I've heard of so far for this season. Georgia plays at Arizona State, at LSU, at Auburn, and plays against Florida at home.

Florida meanwhile has to deal with that road game at Georgia and they play a very good LSU team at home. LSU is actually ranked right behind them in the coaches poll. That will be a tough game for them as well. And as much as I hate to say this, because I hate the SEC, the SEC is a tough conference and there are very few off weeks. So neither Florida or Georgia is really safe.

Also pleasing is that Ohio State and USC play each other during the non-conference games, so one of them will have a loss after that week. Although the only way that loss will hurt either one of them a lot is if A) Ohio State gets their asses kicked hard, or B) USC loses this home game convincingly, it doesn't have to be a blow out though.

That leaves Mizzou, who definitely has the easiest schedule of all these teams. I don't want to turn this into a preview because I really don't know that much about college football (I'm still learning the basics of what the spread offense is). However I do think that this is awesome that SI gives Mizzou this high of a ranking. Regardless though SI's rankings are relatively meaningless (they have no affect on the BCS) but these guys know what they are talking about, so it makes me happy.

The only thing about the cover that I find a little.....weird I guess is that Sean Weatherspoon is on there instead of William Moore, our All-American Safety who will more than likely be drafted in the first round of the next NFL draft. Maclin and Daniel for sure deserve the cover, I just think its weird that Weatherspoon was chosen. But whatever, I'm not complaining.

Here are the other far less cool covers:

****NOTE****
Once when I was at a bar last year, just after the Heisman Trophy voting, I saw Chase Daniel leaving the bar (I was up on the balcony) and I yelled "Tim Tebow's a faggot!" as he was waiting for a cab. He looked up, smiled, and made a gesture of agreement. My heart fluttered a little. Just thought I'd let you guys know.

I have a picture with Chase Daniel. I think that's far cooler.
